It’s not my face you know Not my body, no That little boy wasn’t me, no My face is not the same Don’t fit inside that frame That little boy wasn’t me That boy is gone, gone, gone, gone, gone And never coming back That boy is gone, gone, gone, gone, gone And never coming back Into this world Into this dark, dark world Into this world Although I take the blame I haven’t stayed the same No longer go by that name, no, no No longer feel the way I felt once yesterday I’m not that man anymore That person’s gone, gone, gone, gone, gone And never coming back That person’s gone, gone, gone, gone, gone And never coming back Into this world Into this dark, dark world Into this world

Paradise 03:38
Headed north from the city Waved goodbye to the sea Time to head out Time for you and me We’ll eat meals under the sunlight Reconnect with the wind No one will care what we’ve done or where we’ve been Paradise is where we headed when you retired Electric comes next year Paradise is where we headed when you retired A quarter acre or more What’s that? Smoke through a window I smell that smoke through a window One road down from the west side One road up to the hills My fantasy Where I want to be A dream we must fulfill Paradise is where we headed when you retired Electric comes next year I say that Paradise is where we headed when you retired A quarter acre or more What’s that? Smoke through a window I smell that smoke through a window My fantasy Where I want to be A dream we must fulfill

Is it you? 03:35
I found a photo in an album I wasn’t supposed to see I stuck in the place between you and me I don’t believe in stories Don’t listen to their words I don’t trust in anything I haven’t seen or heard Who’s my brother? Where’s my sister? Is it you? I found teardrops on my pillow Flowing to the floor I thought it meant I’d never sleep By you anymore I don’t believe in rock stars Don’t listen to their songs I don’t learn the chords And I never hum along Who’s my brother? Where’s my sister? Is it you? Is it you? Is it you? Is it you?

It’s been a long lonely time When we can’t see one another And touching is a crime When I get the chance to see you I don’t know what I’ll do It’s been a long lonely time I just want to go away I just want to drive to you Tomorrow that’s what I’m gonna do It’s been a long lonely time Fifty days all alone looking at my broken phone How many more days to go? Time moving way too slow It’s been a long lonely time I wanna get behind the wheel I just wanna drive to you Tomorrow that’s what I’m gonna do It’s been a long lonely time Fifty days all alone looking at my broken phone How many more weeks to go? Time moving way too slow Can’t wait to get in my car Take a drive very far I know when I do arrive Once more I’ll feel alive It’s been a long lonely time When we can’t see one another And touching is a crime When I get out to see you I don’t know what I’ll do It’s been a long lonely time

In the middle of the sky There’s a cloud, a dark cloud Ash is falling from the sky, down Down and around We’ll head west to the sea Shining blue, sparkling green In the middle of the sky Smoke, ash, fire He’s in the garden setting up his plants She’s in the basement looking for blueprints and plans He’s in the kitchen setting out the spoons She’s in the attic looking for vacuums and brooms Hanging over the bay There’s a cloud, a dark cloud Ash is falling from the sky, down Down and around We’ll head west to the sea Shining blue, sparkling green In the middle of the sky Smoke, ash, fire He’s in the closet looking for his notes She’s in the bathtub finding out what in the closet floats He’s in the front yard watering the lawn She’s in the living room turning the stereo and TV on In the middle of the sky There’s a cloud, a dark cloud Ash is falling from the sky, down Down and around We’ll head west to the sea Shining blue, sparkling green In the middle of the sky Smoke, ash, fire He’s in the garden setting up his plants She’s in the basement looking for blueprints and plans He’s in the front yard watering the lawn She’s in the living room turning the stereo and TV on

Wakes you up in the middle of the night Moon is full, but there is no light All clear when you crawled in the tent Hardly slept, now sore and spent Next ridge, next hill Will there be fire? I bet there will Next turn, next right Can’t see the road There’s not enough light Won’t see the city until midnight Could this be my home? Not quite Look straight up in the middle of the sky Ash like down, feathers to fly Follow crows Up and away Where they’re heading We can’t say Next ridge, next hill Will there be fire? I bet there will Next turn, next right Can’t see the road There’s not enough light Won’t see the city until midnight Valleys of California Tonight Eucalyptus groves Burning down the road We’ll head west to the sun Back to where we came from Manzanita wood Burning down the road We’ll head west to the sun Back to where we came from Eucalyptus groves Burning down the road We’ll head west to the sun Back to where we came from Manzanita wood Burning down the road We’ll head west to the sun Back to where we came from Eucalyptus groves Burning down the road We’ll head west to the sun Back to where we came from We’ll head west to the sun Burning down the road We’ll head west to the sun Burning down the road We’ll head west to the sun Burning down the road Smoke and the ash and the inland breeze These are the things following me Following me, yeah, falling from me As I burn it down the road Following me Yeah, falling from me As I burn it down the road Following me Yeah, falling from me As I burn it down the road

Wake up in a cell Afternoon into hell Highway bus men in fear Quiet mixing thrill and fear Out of sounds and sight of guards through ash Into subdivisions Ladders, hooks, fire engines crash Heading back to jail cell Wait for a new fire bell We’ll head out once more When ashes blanket forest’s floor Out of sounds and sight of guards through ash Into subdivisions Ladders, hooks, fire engines crash We save your home yet have nowhere to call our own We hold the line yet go back to serve our time We save your home yet have nowhere to call our own We hold the line yet go back to serve our time Out of sounds and sight of guards once more Back to buses through jailhouse door We save your home yet have nowhere to call our own We hold the line yet we go back and back and back To serve our time

Battle on 03:39
I will be by your side On the barricades Right on the line I will be by your side Raise the shields When the rocks fly Don’t you know there’s a battle on? We’ll head downtown where the battle rages on War toys, black bloc, smoke bomb, it’s a lockdown Don’t stick your head in the sand Meet me at the station downtown I will be by your side On the barricades Right on the line I will be by your side Raise the shields When the rocks fly Don’t you know there’s a battle on? We’ll head downtown where the battle rages on War toys, black bloc, smoke bomb, everyone now Don’t stick your head in the sand Meet me at the station downtown When you see me Take a video Post it everywhere When you see me When you see me Take a video Post it everywhere When you see me I will be by your side On the barricades Right on the line I will be by your side Raise the shields When the rocks fly I will be by your side Raise the shields When the rocks fly

Sleeping 03:07
Bloodied shields and broken bones Recording all with their phones Make up on, scary clowns When it’s nightfall, they’ll run from town Driven underground now will they surface in the spring? I’m sleeping with my street clothes on I’m sleeping with the door wide open I’m sleeping with my steel toes on I’m sleeping with the windows open Oh no Don’t you let me sleep today Don’t let me rest Don’t let me sleep Don’t let me turn my eyes away I’m not sleeping on the bed anymore I’m not sleeping on the bed anymore From now on I’m sleeping right by the door I’m sleeping with my street clothes on I’m sleeping with my face mask on I’m sleeping with my steel toes on I’m sleeping with the windows open Oh no Don’t you let me sleep today Don’t let me rest Don’t let me sleep Don’t let me turn my eyes away

You lifted my heart and strapped it in right next to you You drove so far away My heart bled out red, grey and blue My heart bled red, grey and blue From Manteca to the foothills in the east I see a ghost in the passenger’s seat I must have a little more to drink ‘cause I’m bled out red, grey and blue I’ll see you along the way At a cold rest stop on a smoky day Where the hell I’ll go? I’ll take those yellowed dice and throw I’ll roll those faded cubes I know I know, I know I’ll see you on the way Take a look out the hills Dry and dead, grey and still Am I there right next to you Or bled out red, grey and blue? I’m bled out red, grey and blue! I’ll hear you along the way At a cold rest stop on a smoky day Lyrics I don’t know Melodies still haunt and glow The harmonies just a little too low The melodies still haunt and glow The harmonies just a little too low I know I know I’ll hear you along the way You shuffle hearts Like you’re dealing cards You scuff your deck With your magic tricks You hold your hand tight But you can’t hide your cards from me From Manteca to the foothills in the east There’s a ghost in the driver’s seat Am I there right next to you Or bled out red, grey and blue? Or bled out red grey and blue? I’m bled out red, grey and blue! (repeat)

about

Paradise is a rock album of original songs written and recorded by El Warren in 2020. The album attempts to convey the experiences of Californians through various crises: wildfires, political strife, and social isolation. Like most rock music, the songs convey a strong desire for liberation. As in a good deal of American music and art, the road is a powerful symbol of this liberation, and numerous songs on Paradise are road songs or planning-to-go-on-the-road songs-- songs representing an attempt or desire to leave one place for a new home elsewhere, and which are often set somewhere between those places.
